Dr. Ing. H.c. F. Porsche AG, commonly abbreviated as Porsche AG, is a German vehicle manufacturer specializing in high-end sports cars, SUVs and sedans. Porsche AG is owned by the Volkswagen Group, which in turn is wholly owned by Porsche Automobile Holding SE. Founded in Stuttgart in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche.

Ferdinand Porsche was born in Maffesdorf on 3 September 1875 and was the third of Anton Porsche's five children, engineer and entrepreneur. Ferdinand piloted his own designs in races at the beginning of the XX century. In 1906 he became technical director of Austro-Daimler. Porsche won in 1910 the Prinz-Heinrich Farht, occupying another of its cars the 2nd place. Later he was promoted to general manager. In 1922 the Sascha won the famous Targa Florio (4-cylinder engine and 1.1 litres). Porsche made its mark on Mercedes-Benz for the whole story, he took care of the design of the magnificent Mercedes-Benz S, SS and SSK. During the war, Porsche's studio was engaged in designing war material as well as in the Maus tank or its amphibious version and in the Volkswagen (Kübelwagen) all-terrain. His son Ferry Porsche tried to recover the company, fixing other vehicles and prototyping for third parties, such as the competition's 360 Cisitalia, with 4-wheel drive and a supercharged 1.5-liter engine. Project that was reviewed by Ferdinand upon his release from prison and which filled him with pride because of the well-done work of his son.

Ferry would present the first model of the current Porsche, the 356, in June of 1948, based on chassis of the Volkswagen. The first profits of the vehicle were used to rid his father of the prison. The 356 would initially be handcrafted in the Austrian town of Gmünd, and in 1949, the Porsche family and the production would be moved to Stuttgart. At the end of 1950, he suffered a cerebrovascular disease, of which he would not recover, and he would die months later, on January 30, 1951, watching the sports cars with his name circulate along the road.

By the mid-fifties, at Porsche everyone was thinking about the need to create a replacement for the 356. It had to be a new vehicle because the 356's range of evolution was very limited given the origin in the Volkswagen. This new model became the priority of Porsche engineers and designers. For its conception there were only two basic premises: the engine had to be rear and air cooled (like the 356). In the later meetings between Ferry and his collaborators were materializing characteristics of the vehicle: it was preferred a boxer engine, it should be longer than its predecessor to leave more interior space and the tail of the car had to be fastback type. In the end it was decided to sacrifice the space for the rear passengers, leaving it as a 2 + 2.

The track record of Porsche in circuits is far superior to that obtained in the world of rally and raids. The main championships in circuits obtained by Porsche are:

  • 2 titles as a driver in Formula 1 with the McLaren team
  • 26 victories in F1
  • 17 wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans
  • 22 wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona
  • 18 wins in the 12 Hours of Sebring
  • 14 titles of the World Resistance Championship
  • 18 titles of the IMSA GT Championship
  • 6 titles of the German Championship of Automobilism
